Tipo de práctica asistencial en
grupo desarrollada en EE.UU. que facilita el mantenimiento básico y suplementario de la
salud y los servicios de
tratamiento a los individuos inscritos voluntariamente que pagan previamente unas tasas periódicas fijas que se establecen sin tener en cuenta la cantidad o clase de servicios recibidos. Algunas de las primeras
HMO, entre ellas la Kaiser-Permanente, han demostrado que este
sistema puede facilitar asistencia médica de alta
calidad a
menor coste que otros sistemas de asistencia sanitaria. Además de los servicios de
diagnóstico y
tratamiento, incluida la hospitalización y la
cirugía, una
HMO ofrece a menudo servicios suplementarios, como asistencia
dental,
mental y oftalmológica, así como la
prescripción de fármacos. El
soporte financiero federal
para el establecimiento de las OMAS se proporciona bajo el Título XIII de la
Public Health Service Act de Estados Unidos de 1973.
